S2E9 - Calling Our Spirits with Valerie June
Dear listeners,
Spring is in full bloom in NC. Days are longer, trees are many shades of green and my garden is filled with many different shades of pink emerging from the long winter's rest. And as below, so above: tonight the Pink Moon will shine bright in all her fullness, named for the pink phlox flowers that will absorb the glow.
And today is my 60th birthday. Being part of such a vibrant community is among my greatest gifts. Thank you for being part of this river; I wish love and magick to you all.
I could not ask for a more fitting or dreamy episode of Voices in the River to release on this occasion. It's a conversation with one of my favorite musical artists of all time: Valerie June, whom I can only describe as being a true star being. Her music invites us to trust the path, to live with our whole hearts, and to embrace joy and attunement while navigating darkness. Celebrating the release of her new album, “Owls, Omens, and Oracles”, Valerie shares how she connects to plants, neighbors, owls, ancestors, power, breath, and her own spirit, which she calls upon and even seems to pray to in her celestial songs.

I’ve been a fan of Valerie’s since 2017 when I first heard Astral Plane. You’ve all heard me say that I light candles every morning and dance around to Valerie. Astral Plane is my theme song. And now that her new album is out, I know I will be listening on repeat, trying to bask in the wisdom channeled through her songs.
In early November of 2023, Valerie June came to the Haw River Ball Room in NC. I wrote her a note telling her about Voices in the River. We had just started the show on October 31st - a week or so before. Of course she was incredibly gracious and I hoped beyond hope that someday she’d be a guest. Today, this wish comes true. The perfect birthday present.
